Notes This photo was taken from St. Vincent's beach. Note how
this lunge-feeding humpback also shows a gash on its lower jaw from
pursuing caplin near the shore. During lunge-feeding a whale
"lunges" up through a large school of prey. Sometimes the humpbacks
at St. Vincent's will travel along the beach together as they feed.
They have been observed creating "bubble nets" which likely prevent
the escape of the caplin who perceive the wall of air bubbles as a
barrier; and come together into a tightly packed school — just
perfect for a hungry humpback. Tour guide observations suggest that
some of the same individual humpbacks feed off St. Vincent's every
year.
